The Northwest Suburban office of the American Cancer Society will offer its new Look Good ... Feel Better program on July 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at the society's office located at 1144 N. Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights.  Additional classes are being offered the second Monday of every month.

Guided by volunteer cosmetologists, female cancer patients who participate will learn how to use makeup and skincare techniques to overcome the appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

"This program made such a difference.  To go from feeling like you've lost a lot to feeling confident is a big deal," ovarian cancer survivor Ginny Powell said.  "Look Good ... Feel Better helps women feel feminine again. It really helps when they're feeling down."

Linda DiFronzo, owner of Hair For You Salon Inc. in Arlington Heights and a volunteer Look Good ... Feel Better cosmetologist, has 29 years of beauty enhancement experience.  During the class, she will teach patients to how to cleanse, use foundation, put on eyebrows and apply makeup that looks natural.

"Our goal is to make patients aware of the changes their bodies are going through and teach them how to work with it by creating a basic, natural looking palate," DiFronzo said.

According to DiFronzo, the four natural appendages affected during cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy and radiation are hair, nails, oil and sweat glands.  The American Cancer Society describes possible side effects of cancer treatment as hair loss on the scalp, eyebrows or lashes; weight gain or loss; changes in skin pigmentation and texture; skin oiliness, itchiness or peeling; and alterations in nail texture and growth rate.

Powell recommends Look Good ... Feel Better to any female cancer patient.

"This program lifts patients' spirits," she said.  "The greatest thing is the camaraderie among the women. Boundaries melt when people talk about something as intimate as cancer in your body.  It's good to know that other women understand a patient's feelings. That fact makes a big difference emotionally."
